Our insurance company partner, CNA made a very generous donation to a charity of our choice. Pictured is Rick DeBruyn of CNA presenting the donation to Dorothy Ross of Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation with Doug Fast, VP Commercial Insurance Services. JDRF now has government matching for all donations. You can help in the race to find a cure!

We're very excited for you to come see our new Portage Place location! We have moved just down to the south end of the skywalk to the Hydro building and the MTS Centre. Come see us for your home, auto and business insurance!
If you ask any of us at MIG Insurance, "What does MIG stand for?", we will be quick to explain our roots from our early beginnings as Manitoba Insurance Group. And we're all quick to say "It's M-I-G, not Mig". Although Mig is reminicent of a Russian fighter jet, the term in Russian actually has greater application to our business than any of us had actually realized. Meaning "a moment in time" or "a twinkling", we can relate this term to how your insurance coverage can work for you when it means the most.
We hope you never have to experience the hardship of a substantial loss of your home or possessions. But should that happen for any of our clients, it is our job to assist you in making sure your coverage is such that you will be put back to that moment in time before the loss.
As your broker, we will review your insurance coverage with you on a regular basis to ensure it is keeping pace with changes that occur and inflationary factors. When your MIG broker contacts you, please spend some moments to review your current coverages and outline any changes that may need to be considered. This will allow us to be sure that, in the event of a loss, you and your family can be put back to "the moment in time" before a loss occurred.

MIG was in great company Friday, June 3rd, as we received an award for best medium sized business as chosen by the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce. We were very honoured and pleased to accept the award and feel very fortunate to be able to have the opportunity to grow our business in this area of Winnipeg! Two of our valued clients also received awards -- Winnipeg Hyundai and Auto Gallery. Congrats, guys!

The past few months have seen a lot of change at MIG Insurance -- for the better! As part of our commitment to service to our customers, we have relocated some locations to new premises that provide easier access, great onsite parking and expanded hours of service. In addition to these moves, we have a new location at Charleswood Centre. We are very pleased to welcome staff and management of the former York Insurance to the MIG family. MIG and York have had a long standing relationship for over 15 years! What does this mean for our clients? Well, shortly our signage will change to MIG Insurance. Clients will have access to expanded support such as our Commercial Insurance Services and specialized home insurance products. Otherwise, its the same great staff ready to help you with all your insurance needs!

Spring is truly on its way and after a seemingly endless winter, the warmer temperatures and bright sun are welcomed relief. However, the downside of the upturn in the weather is something we have all been following carefully. As much of Manitoba braces for the impact of overland flooding along the province's river systems, many provisions are being taken to minimize damage. The province has been building enhanced earth dikes along river systems. The "Wolverines" have been deployed in areas where ice damming can be problematic, scoring lacerations in the ice to help with break up. Emergency preparedness plans are in place as provision for sandbagging is being established.
As a homeowner, there are many steps you can take to reduce or mitigate damage to your home:
Make sure your eaves troughs are clear of debris to allow any rain water to drain from around your home.
Install a sump pump in your basement -- the province has announced another million dollars toward this initiative.
Move items of value from your basement to higher ground.
Remove any stored chemicals from areas that may experience water (ie. garage, basement, shed).
Ensure drainage areas in your yard are clear so water has a direct path away from your home.
If your home is in danger of severe flooding, have an evacuation plan which includes alternate accommodation for you and your family members, including the four legged ones!
Monitor the situation by tuning in to local television, radio and websites. Be prepared to mvoe should there be warnings of flash floods.
Although there is no coverage available for damage caused to property from overland flooding**, coverage is available for damage caused by sewer back-up if it has been previously purchased as add-on coverage to your homeowners insurance policy. This is an important coverage option you may wish to add to your policy. However, it can only be added at the time of your renewal.
At MIG Insurance, we work with you to ensure your coverage is what you need it to be. With your renewal, you will have received a coverage checklist. Each year, be sure to review this checklist carefully and notify us if anything has changed that may require amendments to your current insurance coverage.
** From Insurance Bureau of Canada -- "The purpose of insurance is to spread risk amongst many policy holders. But overland flooding is a risk for only a small percentage of the population -- that is, those who live in a flood plain. Since most homeowners are not exposed to the risk and should not share the cost, providing flood insurance would be unaffordable for those who might need it."
