Portage la Prairie

This is where it all began! Our founders, Brian and Susan Gilbert, started MIG Insurance right here in Portage la Prairie in 1995, and it’s still the hub of our business in the Central Plains.

Back then, we were a managed services company for other insurance brokerages. Then in 2007, we moved into insurance retailing, as Pedden Agencies and Capital Insurance joined the MIG family. Since then, MIG has grown to eight offices across southern Manitoba, with more than 50 employees province-wide.

Our two locations in Portage work as a team to provide expert advice and a complete slate of insurance products, including a full range of coverage for your business or farm. With deep roots in this region, we understand your dreams and challenges, and we’re ready to help you find the right risk management solutions.

Invested in our community

We’re enthusiastic supporters of the organizations that keep this community vibrant and growing.

Here in Portage, we support arts groups like Prairie Fusion Arts & Entertainment, the Portage Terriers, the Rotary Club, Portage and District Community Foundation, United Way and many other groups, large and small, that make this region a great place to live. We do our part to keep our economy thriving as members of the Portage & District Chamber of Commerce, Manitoba Chambers of Commerce, Insurance Brokers Association of Manitoba.

We believe being a good corporate citizen means being a great employer. We have great people and we believe in earning their loyalty. That’s why MIG received the Top Insurance Workplace award from Insurance Business Canada Magazine in 2019.

Main office: 412 Saskatchewan Avenue

Office & Neighbourhood

Our office in downtown Portage la Prairie is home base for most of the MIG team in the Central Plains. It’s in a highly visible location, surrounded by progressive businesses that have transformed this stretch of the city’s main route.

Before moving to this location in 2009, we were looking for a space with a downtown location, lots of parking and plenty of room for our team to grow. We found everything we were looking for in a former car dealership. What could be more perfect for a company that prides itself on providing the best auto insurance advice!

As we converted the space, we “drove home” the auto connection by preserving some of the building’s industrial feel. The result is a state-of-the-art, accessible space with a totally modern attitude.

Local interest

A few blocks south of our branch is Island Park, one of the most picturesque recreation spaces you’ll ever see. It’s encircled by Crescent Lake and a five-kilometre paved pathway, illuminated and accessible 24 hours a day.

On the island itself, you’ll find tennis courts, an 18-hole golf course, a fantastic playground and outdoor bandstand for public use. The jewel of the island is Stride Place and Splash Island which feature indoor and outdoor aquatics spaces as well as an arena with two ice surfaces, home to the Portage Terriers MJHL hockey team, regional triple A teams, high school and minor hockey teams as well as Portage Figure Skating Club.

There’s even a 700-acre farm, started in 1940 by George Kelly Hill, one of the most prolific entrepreneurs in the city’s history. George’s descendants still work the farm every summer, selling fruits and vegetables directly to the public.

A few blocks east of our office is Heritage Square, a popular meeting place in the summer months. Walking there, you’ll pass by heritage buildings from the mid to late 1800s, including St. Mary’s Anglican Church. You’ll also see our limestone-clad City Hall, created by the same architect who designed the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa.

Portage and district is home to many growing food technologies and plants which employ many in the area. With investment from McCains, Simplot and Roquette, Portage is a hub of food production. It is also home to the Food Development Centre, where new food innovations are developed and tested.

Office team

This location has a mix of insurance and administrative specialists, all dedicated to providing you with the best possible advice and service. Three of our specialists focus on agricultural and commercial insurance to help you navigate the complexities of business risk management. Meanwhile, Koko – our four-footed Staff Morale Officer – makes sure everyone’s spirits remain high.

The roots of the family business in Portage remain strong, as a new generation builds on our success in the Central Plains. The range of brokerage and administrative positions here provides unique employment opportunities as we continue to grow in the Portage area.

Whether you are visiting our office or using our online services, you can expect every experience to be friendly, respectful and efficient.
